From Sled Lake to Stark Lake – Northwest Territories, Canada

31th July – Wolf

Finally we encountered wolf! A mother with her three cubs were enjoying the sun on the river bank, and we passed them slowly with just a few meter of water separating us. A fantastic experience to witness these creatures in their natural habitat. Also passed another moose and saw our first pine tree. Until now the forests had consisted of spruce only.

Canoed between 15 and 20 km. It started to get hard to tell exactly where on the river we were because of the lack of details on the 1:250′ maps. The wind came strongly against us for most of the day, making progress slow.  Tired from yesterdays long leg we made an early camp, and enjoyed a Saturday evening with popcorn next to the camp fire.

Also sorted out how to ease the process of hoisting the bags with food up into trees. We had brought two hoisting tackles (taljer) and with some engineering thought, we could put them to use without having to cut our 30 m climbing rope.
